There are some great lines in this passage, but my favorite might be "...and she didn’t have to see the American falls, which, compared to the glories of the Canadian side, looked like a garbage chute leading down to a dumpster."

Thanks, Erin...While I don't do sneaky metaphors, it does occur to me that the one you mention pretty well describes the state of things in 2026 U.S.A...My own favorite line is when Julia, when she realizes what's going on, tells them "Don't make me go back there." Felt I perfectly understood what was in her heart right at that moment....and, taking the larger view, none of this right now want to go back there, there meaning HERE.
